A CleverView for cTrace Analysis Case Study

AES - the Business Service Management Company

A Large Hospital and Health Services Entity based in the Southeast
AES prides itself in developing solutions that are easy to install and can be put to practical use in the shortest possible timeframe. We wanted to share with you one of many instances where this has proven true with CleverView for cTrace Analysis.

One of AES customers is a large hospital and health services entity based in the Southeast region of the US. They had just implemented a third-party product to bridge the gap between legacy applications and databases by utilizing a SOA design via a Web-based front-end interface. This interface was essential, being used to facilitate such things as patient admissions and releases. There were some concerns about compatibility with the legacy software and they were also experiencing double packet transmissions. Collecting packets from multiple back-end applications and databases on multiple MVS systems would have been extremely time-consuming.

The technician had heard of CleverView for cTrace Analysis capabilities for simplifying the collection process of TCP/IP packets on z/OS, and analyzing the packets quickly. Within hours of receiving the product it went live and within a few days it was deployed on 2 processors and 4 LPARs, efficiently collecting traces to analyze their SOA application issues.

The product analysis also provided conversation-focused reports to help easily identify specific transactions based on their sequence of execution and response times. Other reports highlighted specific anomalies, including packet retransmissions and response time latencies between the back-end applications. As a result the SOA application issues were resolved in short order.

Now CleverView for cTrace Analysis is also being used to import and archive packet traces collected via other open-based packet collection utilities saving and comparing them side-by-side. This allows the use of the traceDiff function to compare packet content being sent/received on the z/OS Communication Server alongside traffic being sent/received on the network side.

The entire process of trialing, installing, procurement, solving critical problems and enterprise-wide deployment took just 5 weeks!
